June 2014 – British Athletics League – Southampton

Harrow Athletic Club continued its solid British League National Division Two campaign with a second successive fifth spot in round two in Southampton on Saturday.

In a remarkable coincidence, Harrow’s elite men scored 257 points, exactly the same as round one, finishing behind the hosts Southampton, Basingstoke, Bristol and Kingston but well clear of Nottingham, Derby and Southend.

Tony Daffurn set a personal best of 15.36, to win the triple jump, and is now only 11 centimetres behind the 35 year old Club record. Chris Alexis made it a double victory for Harrow by taking the ‘B’ string with a good 13.70.

Dave Sketchley won his sixth consecutive British League javelin event, recording 59.25, to beat his nearest rival by just over a metre. Luke Roach-Christie placed second in the shot, with a good 14.73, and also set a new PB of 38.44 in the discus.

Tom Nichols equalled his PB of 2 metres, for third in a high quality high jump, while Noel Reid set a season’s best of 1.85 for second in the ‘B’ string.

Stephen Mears produced his best BAL performance in finishing second in the 1500 metres in a fast 3.54.78. Matt Carey had to settle for second in the steeplechase despite running faster than his wining time in round one with 9.18.03. Ashley Hill ran a fast 54.52 for fourth in the 400 metres hurdles.

Harrow’s next British League fixture is in Derby on Saturday 5 July.
